about the reading part, I didn't have that much of a choice: my fav french author (something like ten years ago ;p : Asuka Kureru/Askerian) always translated her stories and one day she decided to stop because most of HER friends were English. So she just went ahead and directly wrote in English.
At the time, I couldn't read a paragraph without switching five time to my English/French dictionary, at least XD And most of the time, I only understood the general meaning. But I got better pretty quick, 'coz she write something like 30 pages for a chapter XDDD So I had a lot of training.
